Have you ever felt like one gigantic failure? Did you think or mumble to yourself, “I’m such a failure! No one will ever want me or want to be my spouse.”
It’s an awful way to feel. One day I was in that funky mood but I was on my knees crying out to God.
“God, what is wrong with me?”
“I’ve made such a mess out of my life. I’m such a failure. I’m so sorry. I never wanted my life to turn out like this.”
The sobbing and tears came from the depths of my heart. I think this was one of the deepest prayers I’ve ever prayed.
“Lord, how could this have happened? What’s wrong with me? I wanted to have a beautiful perfect marriage–that’s what Christian’s are supposed to have, aren’t we?
God, I don’t blame You if You don’t give me another chance in marriage. But if one day, You decide to give me another chance, I know what I want. God, first I want my future mate to be committed to You. Second, I’d like for him to be trustworthy and for him to trust me… ”
My list continued. By the time I finished I had listed “12” traits of my ideal spouse if God would give me another chance including my potential spouse’s desire to travel and his attitude about his job and people.
At that time, I’d never heard of anyone writing a prayer wish list of what they’d like in a future mate. But I felt strongly that God wanted me to write the desires of my heart.
When I finished my prayer, I wiped the tears from my eyes, tore the page of “qualifications” from my notebook and placed it inside my Bible.
As I made my list that day, I realized what was really important to me in another person was his values and the most important of all was his commitment to God.
Little did I know that around that same time, a certain man, inspired by his Sunday school teacher, sat at his kitchen table composing his list of desires for his special spouse.
Isn’t God’s omnipotence amazing? Just think, He can see each one of us at one time!
Isn’t it awesome to think that God could see me in my own little living room and hear me pouring out my heart to Him and crying. He even collected my tears.
“You (God) keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” PS 56:8 (NLT)
Around the same time that God was listening to my sorrows and desires, He was also hearing the other man pouring out his heart about who his perfect spouse would be.
I Felt God Told Me to Go to Sunday School
One morning I was praying for our church, the pastor, the leaders, the Sunday Schools classes and I felt God telling me that I needed to go to Sunday School.
“But God, I don’t know anyone in the singles Sunday School Class. And besides that I don’t even know where they meet.” I know these were lousy excuses but for some reason, I just didn’t want to go.
But God didn’t stop impressing on my heart that I needed to go. Finally, I caved in and called the church to find out where the singles met.
I Obeyed God
I was nervous as I walked into the room of strangers but I felt good I knew I was obeying God. I took my seat at the end of a row so I could scoot out fast.
While the Sunday School class shared prayer requests, a man shared some of his thoughts about prayer time. His insight into prayer, led to a discussion between the two of us after class.
After our brief chat, Brian offered to walk me over to the sanctuary and invited me to sit with him during that church service.
Time seemed to skip a few beats as Brian and I chatted after church. Our chatting continued the following days, weeks, months and years.
A couple of weeks after we met, we discovered that each of us had created our list for our Perfect Mate. While I felt led to write mine during my prayer time, Brian’s Sunday School teacher had suggested that members of the class write what they would like in their future mate.
Brian wrote his wish list for his perfect mate. Amazingly, when Brian finished his list, he also had “12” items.
The “12” items on his list and the “12” items on my list matched so well that it seemed unbelievable, unless of course, you Believe in the supernatural ways which God answers our prayers.
God Brought Us Together
Brian and I knew, without any doubt, God had brought us together. We both had been through agonizing divorces, had been living in different states thousands of miles apart and yet God had brought us together and was giving us a new chance!
And What Happened to the Lists?
Approximately, five months after we met we were married. We folded our lists together and put them into our Bible to remind us of how Mysterious God works sometimes and how He answers our prayers. (That was over 20 years ago and they are still wonderful reminders to us.)
“I love the Lord because He hears my prayers and answers them. Because He bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I breathe.” PS 116:1-2 (TLB)
I want our grandchildren and others who will follow us to understand how God brought Brian and me together.
Who knows– one day one of them may be having a tough day and perhaps this story will encourage them to talk or even cry out to God about their problem. So this story will be preserved in my Faithbook.
Are you searching for your soul mate? God will lead you to the right person if you ask Him (even if you have been divorced.)
Is your love story special? Perhaps you don’t think so but your grandchildren probably will. Let me encourage you to grab a pen or computer and start creating your Love Story. Then place it in your Faithbook for your loved ones and those who will follow you.
